Gradient Vector Flow Deformable Models

چکیده

Deformable models are used extensively in image processing, computer vision, and medical imaging applications, particularly to delineate object boundaries. Problems associated with initialization and poor convergence to boundary concavities, however, have limited their utility. This chapter presents an external force for deformable models, largely solving both problems. This external force, which we call gradient vector flow (GVF), is computed as a diffusion of the gradient vectors of a gray-level or binary edge map derived from the image. It differs fundamentally from traditional deformable model external forces in that it cannot be written as the negative gradient of a potential function, and the corresponding deformable model is formulated directly from a dynamic force equation rather than a energy minimization formulation. Using several two-dimensional examples and two three-dimensional examples, we show that GVF has a large capture range and is able to move deformable models into boundary concavities.

An Improved 2D Colonic Polyp Segmentation Framework Based on Gradient Vector Flow Deformable Model

Computed Tomography Colonography has been proved to be a valid technique for detecting and screening colorectal cancers. In this paper, we present a framework for colonic polyp detection and segmentation. Firstly, we propose to use four different geometric features for colonic polyp detection, which include shape index, curvedness, sphericity ratio and the absolute value of inner product of max...

A New Deformable Model Using Dynamic Gradient Vector Flow and Adaptive Balloon Forces

An extension of the gradient vector flow snake (GVF snake) is presented. The method is based on combining two other external forces. First, the adaptive balloon force has been developed to increase the GVF snake’s capture range and convergence speed. Then, a dynamic GVF force is introduced to provide an efficient evolution-stop mechanism. In this way, we prevent the snake from breaking through ...

Geometric Potential Force for the Deformable Model

Deformable models often vary in object boundary representation and the external force field used. Conventional methods, i.e. geodesic active contour model [1], have difficulties in dealing with boundary concavities, weak edges and image noise. Some approaches such as the generalized gradient vector flow (GGVF) [3] showed some improvements but have convergence issues caused by saddle or stationa...
